Altar of Eden
Altar of Eden by James Rollins

by James Rollins

Dr. Lorna Polk is following up on her research projects at ACRES after a hurricane when a Border Patrol helicopter arrives at the facility to enlist her help elsewhere. A stranded trawler filled with strange animals has been found and a man from her past, Jack Menard, has turned to her for guidance. Each animal seems altered, genetic throwbacks with traits long lost. Worse yet, one animal is missing- a large jaguar with huge fangs, a saber tooth. However, neither Jack nor Lorna is prepared for the truth behind these animals or for the lengths people will go to keep them from being exposed.

ALTAR OF EDEN sets a fast pace that doesn’t relent until the final page is turned! James Rollins creates a seemingly unbelievable scenario and makes it come to vivid life. One can’t help but be drawn into this world of genetic engineering without being both horrified and fascinated. Concepts such as synchronicity of intelligence and fractals are included just enough to make the story seem plausible without overwhelming the more casual reader with too many technical terms.

Lorna and Jack are both well developed characters. It’s easy to care for both of them, and the mystery behind their past association adds a nice twist to the storyline. Lorna’s profession as a veterinarian is enhanced by the author’s personal experiences in the field as one can see her appreciation and love of all animals shining through. In fact, it is this very element that makes ALTAR OF EDEN almost heartbreaking when one sees just what is behind their unique traits.

ALTAR OF EDEN is a fantastic adventure and a tale well worth reading! James Rollins always provides readers with stories that are fast paced and entertaining but frankly he’s outdone himself with ALTAR OF EDEN. Bravo to Mr. Rollins for yet another winner!
