Focus on Photographing People
Focus on Photographing People by Haje Jan Kamps

by Haje Jan Kamps

Do you want to learn how to creatively photograph people?

FOCUS ON PHOTOGRAPHING PEOPLE covers all the basics, such as camera lenses, aperature, lighting, etc, while providing the photographer with some new ideas on how to approach the photographic process. Each concept is explained clearly and concisely with examples and short notes to remind the photographer of the key points. On several occasions, Haje Jan Kamps provides photographic examples of when things have gone awry- this is a particularly helpful visual with understanding white balance, for instance.

Style is a key point in achieving good photos and Haje Jan Kamps has more of an artistic style than the general photographer. However, the vast amount of information and the range of examples are useful to anyone just learning how to take photographs of people or for anyone wanting a creative boost. One thing I would have preferred would have been more information as to the specifics on each photo so that I could see how the aperture and shutter speed affected each shot. While there is a general discussion on these issues, a bit more information about each photo would have provided multiple examples throughout the book. For a beginner, however, FOCUS ON PHOTOGRAPHING PEOPLE is the perfect starting point as it’s simple and easy to use.
