I Am Number Four

by Pittacus Lore

Nine children and their guardians fled from Lorien as the planet was attacked and destroyed by the Mogadorians. They fled to the nearest inhabitable planet, Earth. They have remained in hiding, waiting for the children to gain their powers, called Legacies, so they can fight back and reclaim Lorien. Unfortunately, the Mogadorians have followed them and are systematically killing them one by one. John Smith is Number Four and he’s headed to Paradise, Ohio.

I AM NUMBER FOUR is a fun, action-filled tale. The author creates a world where aliens and conspiracy theories really are part of reality and combines it with everyday things such as bullying and home economics classes. The resulting mix is quite entertaining, although parents of younger readers may find the violence and language a bit too much. However, most young adult readers will find this story to be a true delight as the core of the story is about the importance of friends and family, even when every moment requires keeping a watchful eye out for creatures like the Mogadorians.

The characters are fun and easy for young adults to relate to, although a bit stereotypical. However, the author throws in a few surprises for the reader as the story progresses. Besides, who can’t help but love John’s friend, Sam? However, it is John’s dog, Bernie Kosar who steals the show- not only for his name (as a football fan, I can’t help but love his name!) but for his dedication and loyalty to John.

I AM NUMBER FOUR is a tale worth reading, especially for young adult males who like their stories mixed with a bit of science fiction. The writing style itself is a bit simplistic at times but the action scenes are where the story truly excels. I’m curious to see where the author will take the second book as the ending throws quite a few shockers at the reader.  Sheer entertainment!
