Insatiable
by Meg Cabot

Meena
Harper is just flat out sick of the vampire craze, especially with the
recent spate of deaths hitting the news! Isn’t it bad enough that she
has her own touch of paranormal in her life, as she knows just how
someone will die? Now her beloved writing job for the soap opera,
INSATIABLE, has taken a turn for the worse. Not only is she being
forced to work for someone incompetent, but she’s also now expected to
write about vampires! Little does she realize it, but vampires are
about to invade her life in every aspect, including her love life.
INSATIABLE is the sort of book that readers will either love or hate,
mainly depending on whether they see the shades of other vampire tales
as sly parody or as a complete rip off. I fall into the first group as
I giggled at every reference, from DRACULA to the Sookie Stackhouse
tales to even Buffy! Some aspects are pretty obvious, such as Meena’s
and her brother, Jon’s names but there are some other more subtle
similarities. I think framing the storyline within the context of a
soap opera is what made the storyline work as a parody for me.
Meg Cabot is willing to poke fun at her characters while asking the
reader just what is it that we love so much about vampires. Part of the
appeal of INSATIABLE is Meena herself, however. She’s not an urban
fantasy kick-butt heroine but is instead an everyday woman (with a few
quirks, of course), working daily at a job she loves. What stands out
even more, however, is her unwillingness to rely on the strength of a
vampire male or fall swooning at his feet that makes her stand out.
INSATIABLE is sheer fun, if just a tad bit outrageous at times. Fans of
vampire fiction who want to see all the vampire stereotypes turned
upside down will appreciate Meg Cabot’s tale. I am thrilled to see
there will be a sequel as the ending practically begs for one. Bravo!
