Muhammad Ali: The People's
Champion

by
Walter Dean Myers
Illustrated by Alex Delinois
Muhammad
Ali is one of the most famous heavyweight boxers in history. Known for
his bold speech and overpowering boxing style, Muhammad Ali broke
through racial barriers and fought for the right to be a conscientious
objector to war. Follow Muhammad Ali’s rise from his early beginnings
as Cassius Clay, Jr. to becoming the People’s Champion in Walter Dean
Myers’ book, MUHAMMAD ALI: THE PEOPLE’S CHAMPION.
Muhammad Ali can be a very controversial figure as historically he’s a
figure either loved or hated for his strong stance on issues he
believes in. Walter Dean Myers does a phenomenal job at capturing the
vibrancy and strength of character demonstrated by this well known
heavyweight champion. Through the visual images and accompanying text,
readers are given a brief but exciting introduction to the various
facets of Muhammad Ali’s outspoken and daring personality. From his
antiwar stance to his conversion to the Nation of Islam to his more
recent diagnosis with Parkinson’s Disease, Muhammad Ali’s courage to
stand up for his convictions and overcome hurdles shines through.
Children will love the bold images by Alix Delinois! Parents should
note that the images are befitting the time period and some
explanations about the tensions that arose during the Civil Rights
Movement might help provide some additional context for younger
readers. MUHAMMAD ALI: THE PEOPLE’S CHAMPION is an excellent resource
to help introduce young sports fans to a very important segment of
American history..
